| Job Description: |
The Counselor II receives both oral and written instructions from the direct supervisor. Supervision is accomplished through regularly scheduled meetings with the Unit Supervisor and the monitoring of specific tasks for completeness.
Client Care:
1. Evaluate client history assessments on each assigned client. Assess needs and problems.
2. Assist and guide the client with the development of an Individual Treatment Plan. Present identified problems, objectives, goals, to client in treatment plan review. Include appropriate referral sources in treatment and discharge planning.
3. Facilitate Group Therapy.
4. Facilitates/Participates in family group sessions
5. Perform individualized counseling with assigned clients as required
6. Observe and evaluate the progress of the client through treatment and documenting these observations in the client record.
7. Develop with client a detailed aftercare plan which includes personal AA contacts, non-residential continuing care group and community referrals.
8. Share/coordinate client treatment information with family counselors.
9. Lead the client through the steps of AA/NA recovery program. Assign and review instructional materials.
10. Participate in the client staffings.
11. Update county counselors, probation officers, social workers, or any other agency involved with the client, on a weekly basis during the treatment process.
12. Must meet Rule 31 requirement of allowing 25% of counselor’s time to be spent doing paperwork
Organizational Needs:
1. Present lectures and orientations on a rotating basis.
2. Present educational lectures at workshops and seminars, as requested by outreach personnel and at the discretion of supervisor.
3. Be familiar with insurance procedures, including pre-authorizations and updating procedures.
4. Have an understanding of Rule 31 and the six dimensions of treatment
Personal Needs:
1. Arrange with supervisor, continuing development of skills and abilities through a defined in-service program and/or other seminars, workshops, outside of Project Turnabout.
2. Attend all scheduled staff meetings and in-service training.
3. Obtain and maintain licensure as required for the position |

| Education, training, experience: |
1. Have excellent written and oral communication skills
2. Be proficient on the computer and be able to document client progress notes and/ or be willing to learn.
3. Be able to communicate by phone and email with referral sources. Discuss the client problems and needs with them in an attempt to arrive at an appropriate treatment course of action.
4. Counselors must be at least 21 years of age.
5. Must be licensed as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor or licensed in a related field and able to meet the MN Board of Behavioral Health standards with respect to Rule 31 standards and have a plan to acquire alcohol and drug licensure within a prescribed period of time. Must also pass a MN Dept. of Human Services criminal background study
6. A higher degree of knowledge, experience and education is required.
7. Must be able to document at least two years of freedom from chemical/ gambling use problems.
8. Must maintain a professional demeanor in keeping with all policies and procedures of Project Turnabout with regard to dress code; respectfulness toward clients, client family members, staff, referral sources, vendors, etc.; attendance and punctuality; and all other policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Must be able to observe client’s body language and behaviors while in group, family, and one-on-one sessions.*
2. Must be able to have good listening skills and able to interpret information received into client files.*
3. Must be able to sit for at least two hours at a time; stand for at least one hour for lecturing; minimal amount of lifting, may have to assist clients with some lifting when they arrive and leave unit.*
